Overview: This executive paper addresses Switch Fabric Architectures and certain other point-to-point interconnects technologies. Publicity and press releases over the last year or more seem to imply that switch fabrics are a new and revolutionary technology, destined to change the computing world as we know it. Although the latter may be true, switch fabrics per se, or at least the concept of switch fabrics, have been around for quite a while. What are new are the application of these to chip-to-chip, board-to-board and, to some degree, box-to-box communication, and the particulars of such implementation.
