Overview: Energy consumption in the commercial sector has been neglected in official statistics and in the application of energy efficiency policies and programmes. The rate of growth in energy consumption in the last 25 years has been approximately three times greater than in the domestic sector, and is projected to exceed growth in all other sectors except transport. Significant cost effective CO2 savings have been identified in the commercial sector, using readily available technologies. Proposed changes to the Building Regulations will go some way to improving the energy efficiency of new commercial premises.
