Overview: The key objectives of this paper were to examine how commercial (non-research and development) renewable energy projects have been financed in European (EC and others) and North American countries, highlighting likely future trends; determine the level and type of any financial, contractual or market incentives available in each country for each renewable technology (both historically and at present); and evaluate and analyze the success of each incentive programme in terms of cost to government/ consumer and capacity brought forward and to highlight likely future trends in government incentives in each country.
