Overview: This white paper deals with simulation modeling with optimization technology, which can benefit all types of manufacturing processes, such as job shops, continuous flow productions, discrete assemblies, and mass customized manufacturing. Schemes of manufacturing processes are designed at the inception of the manufacturing process will greatly influence the overall system throughput and efficiency upon process implementation. Effects of this influence will be dependent upon different optimization levels at various process design stages. This work addresses a method to optimize a group of stochastic manufacturing processes at the conceptual design stage, rather than after resources and huge capital investments have been expended on facilities.
