Overview: This paper deals with the study of socio-economic aspects and key drivers and barriers that determine the market penetration of modern small-scale bioenergy systems (SSBS) such as pellet-fired burners and stoves. It applies some diffusion of innovation theory and explores the usefulness of standard epidemic diffusion of innovation modeling for making predictions on the rate at which SSBS may penetrate the market. The empirical part contains an illustrative analysis of the historical and expected future market penetration of pellet-fuelled residential central heating systems.
