Overview: This paper sets out to review the technical progress in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) technology and assess the opportunities of this technology in several market sectors. The viability of the DMFC has been assessed in terms of performance and operational requirements, cost, fuelling issues (e.g. health and safety, distribution, etc), and advances in alternative competing technologies. Where technological advances are required, these have been identified and recommendations for future development made.
