Overview: This paper examines the effects of common atmospheric pollutants and exhaust gas from internal combustion engines on the cathode of a solid polymer fuel cell. The influence of the cell operating conditions is investigated to give some insight into the interaction between the cell and the pollutant in order to postulate a mechanism. Solid polymer fuel cells continue to be the subject of intensive research and development efforts, due to the high power densities they offer.
