Overview: The aim of this paper is to build an understanding of the wastes and emissions to the environment generated by SOFC and SPFC system manufacture, and subsequently identify key factors which might pose a barrier to the commercial competitiveness of either system. Fuel cell systems for both stationary power generation and transport applications are efficient and emit low levels of polluting emissions in use. With growing concerns about urban air quality, regional acidification and climate change, these characteristics mean that fuel cells are receiving much attention.
