Overview: This paper demonstrates that fuel cell based systems are technically and economically viable for extended autonomy typically in excess of 4-6 hours for 1kW systems and 2-3 hours for 5kW systems. However, fuel cells are clearly not, at this time, viable substitutes for the current short autonomy back up UPS system that typically provide 10 minutes of back up power to facilitate orderly shut down of computers or computer servers. Short autonomy on line UPS systems must operate 24 hours 7 days a week and no fuel cell in this power range is capable of performing in this way.
