Overview: This fact-sheet introduces organic food, which is produced using methods aimed at enhancing the environmental health of the farm ecosystem. The use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, genetically engineered plants, growth regulators and feed additives are not permitted on organically certified farms in Canada. Organic systems are an attempt at enhanced soil health, improved environmental quality and more efficient use of natural resources.
