Overview: The overall aim of this paper is to investigate the limitations presented by the existing electricity networks in England, Wales and Scotland to the large scale deployment of offshore wind energy. Offshore wind energy is expected to have a number of advantages over onshore wind energy, such as higher wind speeds, lower air temperature, higher air density and lower turbulence. As offshore installations will be some distance from any other areas of human activity, it is to be expected that the permitted noise level from an offshore wind array could be allowed to exceed those allowed from onshore sites, thereby allowing higher tip-speeds for offshore turbines.
