Overview: This paper reviews the current global market and manufacturing base for wind turbines. The principal value for most countries actively involved in implementing wind energy to date is the control or reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Wind energy can also bring important advantages in reducing dependence on imported fuel supplies, reducing the uncertainties caused by fuel supply price fluctuations. As a result of the early drive by the USA and subsequently by Europe, wind technology has matured, combining environmental benefits, reliability and cost effectiveness. Worldwide, wind power is becoming an accepted technology with a total installed capacity of over 23 GW.
