Overview: The paper discusses about the leading health indicators (LHIs) that are being used to monitor the health of Rhode Islanders. Objective 1-1 on health insurance coverage is one of the measures for the LHI on access to health care. Nationwide, uninsured persons have limited access to preventive and primary medical care, which can result in a worsened overall health status. Almost one out of six (16.1%) Americans ages 18-64 years have no health insurance coverage. In 1998-2000, the proportion of people of all ages who lacked health insurance coverage in Rhode Island was the lowest rate among all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
