Overview: The first part of this paper focuses on the interaction between the recent trends that have been shaping the way financial services are provided worldwide and the advent of IT. The second part focuses on the regulatory challenges posed by IT to financial services. The paper discusses why regulation of financial markets continues to be necessary in spite of the changes in the financial structure brought about by technology, and what sort of approach to regulation is better suited to this new environment, particularly in consumer and investor protection and promotion of competition.
