Overview: The UK has some of the world's best renewable energy resources, especially from wind (both onshore and offshore), and other marine sources - tidal and wave. The Obligation requires a growing proportion of electricity in the UK to come from renewable sources: 10.4 per cent by 2010. Wind energy is one of the most successful of the technologies to date, and is benefiting from these new support measures. Installed wind capacity expanded by 20 per cent in 2002 to reach 552 megawatts (MW) - ten projects - comprising more than 80 turbines.
