Overview: This paper includes a brief introduction to the concept of sustainable development, and will identify the fundamental principles that must be adhered to in order to achieve it. It will also look at the role of the built environment in achieving sustainability and will seek to identify the most pertinent social, economic and environmental issues for the various professionals involved in the built environment to address. Finally it was felt that, in thinking about sustainability in this context, the focus may need to shift away from the narrow definitions of building types, and towards the activities that take place within and between buildings.
