Overview: This paper explores the emergence of virtual private LAN services and examines ways for carriers to deploy VPLS as part of their VPN portfolio. The VPLS architecture for implementing multipoint Ethernet transparent LAN services combines the protocol transparency of Layer 2 VPNs and the any-to-any connectivity of VPRNs with the cost and bandwidth scalability advantages inherent in the use of Ethernet interfaces.
