Overview: Multi-service transport has successfully integrated new services and new technologies on a common platform. This has enabled operators to extend the working lives of their SONET/SDH networks and capitalize on their existing investment in infrastructure, equipment and operations. Convergent transport is the successor to multi-service transport, bringing yet another level of technology integration. Not only will it be possible to combine packet, time and wavelength multiplexing technologies on the same platform, but it will also enable carriers to optimize their networks for any future mix of services, taking account their specific requirements in terms of connectivity, bandwidth and quality of service.
