Overview: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the determinants of self-employment among older workers. The paper builds upon previous research on retirement patterns and on entrepreneurship, and focus upon the roles of liquidity constraints and health insurance on the decision to become and to remain self-employed. Liquidity constraints may be less important impediments to self-employment among older workers than among the young because of life-cycle asset accumulation, either through personal savings or through institutionalized pension arrangements.
