Overview: Encapsulation schemes are essential for scalable Layer-2 VPNs (Metro-Ethernet). Two aspects that are most important for successful deployment of Metro-Ethernet are; customer scalability/segregation and MAC address table explosion containment. Customer scaling/segregation can be achieved by VLAN stacking wherein the provider can insert a segregation tag into the Ethernet frames at ingress nodes and strip them off at the egress nodes.
