Overview: This technical white paper explains how the objectives detailed in the accompanying strategy white paper (The telecommunications holy grail or a pragmatic means of raising carrier profitability) can be achieved using a GMPLS distributed control plane. It first describes the conceptual evolution that, starting from MPLS, led to the integration of GMPLS in circuit-oriented transport networks, including optical cross-connects. It further explains the key MPLS enhancements leading to the current GMPLS protocol architecture. Finally, it gives an overview of the signaling and traffic engineering routing extensions required to provide distributed control for Synchronous Digital Hierarchy/Synchronous Optical Network (SDH/SONET) and optical networks.
