Overview: A confluence of factors - the economic and environmental advantages of nuclear energy combined with drawbacks to the use of other fuels - is creating an aura of inevitability around the prospect that new nuclear plants will be ordered in the United States. The same combination of factors will make nuclear energy a key to sustainable development around the world in this new century. The industry also is taking the steps to plan for the future - certification of advanced reactor designs, changes to the licensing process and commitments by U.S. nuclear companies to test the process, and many other initiatives included in the Nuclear Energy Institute's (NEI) Vision 2020 plan.
