Overview: This paper presents a historical review of the development of the market for syndicated loans, and has shown how this type of lending, which started essentially as a sovereign business in the 1970s, evolved over the 1990s to become one of the main sources of funding for corporate borrowers. The syndicated loan market has advantages for junior and senior lenders. It provides an opportunity to senior banks to earn fees from their expertise in risk origination and manage their balance sheet exposures.
