Overview: This white paper examines the debit market in Canada, and contrasts the Canadian debit system with that of the U.S. Some commentators have noted the higher per-capita usage of debit in Canada relative to the U.S., and then attempted to argue that this higher adoption rate is a function of one difference in the debit systems between the two countries. Yet, the debit markets in the U.S. and Canada are different in almost every respect - different products, network structures, pricing models, banking systems and regulatory environments.
