Overview: This paper provides some insight into the relationship between POL ratings and the fast dynamic load requirements of data processors. Capacitor manufacturers provide data describing the characteristics of their parts in fast load switching environments, but less information is available to a system designer about the relationship of those parts to "upstream" POL regulator operation. In a typical "on-board" distributed power system a 12volt "bus converter" or intermediate source is connected to one or more POL regulators, which power fast switching devices.
