Overview: Funded jointly by the Cairns City Council and Queensland Government, the $21 million Cairns Esplanade Project was opened to the public in March 2003. After years of public consultation to assess how the foreshore fronting Trinity Inlet could best be developed to meet the needs of the public, and the commercial centre revitalized following the suburbanization of shopping centers, the 4800-mts.sq salt-water swimming lagoon and surrounding parklands were complete. In far north Queensland, Cairns are uniquely situated between the Great Barrier Reef on one side and the rainforests on the other.
