Overview: Maintaining vigilance is of paramount importance in any critical care unit. Eliminating excessive false alarms is essential in preventing the 'crying wolf syndrome' of decreased vigilance. There are numerous occasions in the PICU when false alarms from oximeters will be issued due to strong body motion or crying during procedures, shivering, convulsions, hypothermic vasoconstriction, poor peripheral circulation, or large venous fluctuations due to strong respiratory effort caused by respiratory distress and asthma attacks.
