Overview: In this paper, with reference to real, in-service bridges, it has been shown that information obtained from visual inspection may suggest a structure which is different from the internal effective one. The historical sources highlight that these cases are much more common than usually believed. Furthermore, it has been shown that technological details can play an important role on the mechanical response of the bridge discussing how a hollow spandrel construction, depending on the specific geometrical and technological arrangement, may be considered.
