Overview: The absorption of water in a single-fiber reinforced epoxy-matrix composite system has been modelled successfully using the Finite Element method. The modelling was achieved by considering an analogy between mass diffusion and heat-flow. The model also assumed that polymer swelling due to water absorption was linear and analogous to thermal expansion. These analogies proved to be sufficient in that they helped to produce simulation results that were consistent with experimental data.
