Overview: The 2000 island residents of Joanes, Brazil, needed reliable, cost efficient power to deliver energy and stabilize power quality during hours of peak demand. Northern Power Systems was contracted to design and install a 50kW hybrid power system to bring reliable, cost efficient power to the community of Joanes, Brazil. Prior to the installation of the new system, residents of Joanes were receiving costly, insufficient power from their local 1MW diesel plant. With favorable wind and sun conditions available, Northern was able to provide a utility intertied system, incorporating wind and solar energy with a 228kWh battery. The system consists of four 10kW wind turbines and a 10kW photovoltaic array.
