Overview: The Bircher family of DePere, Wisconsin, has been living in a mainstream solar demonstration home they built using readily available, off-the-shelf equipment and contractors from the local area. They wanted to show that solar energy technologies can be attractive, reliable, user-friendly and easily integrated into the design. They also wanted to minimize energy use through efficiency and conservation, and use healthy and natural materials to maintain indoor air quality and minimize environmental impacts. They have found that the home uses 40 percent less energy than homes of similar size, age and number of occupants.
