Overview: Rapid growth in automobile ownership in Asia -"The China Syndrome" is an expression raised in talks over future oil markets and future carbon emissions: What are the implications of large Asian countries becoming motorized? Using cross country comparisons and extrapolations of GDP growth, the article projects car ownership and use in three large Asian economies in 2020. Parameters are chosen from a review of IEA experience with automobile use between 1970 and 1995. With assumptions about car utilization and fuel economy based on this experience, article projects total oil use for the increase in cars in China, India and Indonesia in a scenario called "The Road Ahead".
