Overview: This paper is intended to provide information on the status and perspective of the international fusion R&D programme and on the ITER project as well as to respond to fundamental questions on fusion, such as "When will fusion power be available?, Why invest in fusion?". In order to draw the attention of policy-makers in member countries to the potential of fusion energy and to accelerate the decision process for the ITER construction, early this year the IEA Fusion Power Coordinating Committee discussed and agreed on a position paper on fusion.
