Overview: IEA Members have repeatedly called for increased energy technology development to help countries respond to the climate-change challenge. The IEA Committee on Energy Research and Technology (CERT) and the IEA Secretariat have therefore undertaken an assessment of the energy technology developments that could generate significant cuts in CO2 emissions while also meeting security and economic goals in the energy sector. This paper presents the assessment's initial findings. Annex 1 provides an overview of promising areas for clean technology development.
