Overview: This review provides an update and extension of the initial report by Rybach (1998) that introduced the Geothermal Implementing Agreement (GIA) and described its structure, status and prospects shortly after its formation in March 1997. The International Energy Agency Implementing Agreement for a Cooperative Programme on Geothermal Energy Research and Technology, or Geothermal Implementing Agreement (GIA), provides an important framework for wide-ranging international cooperation in geothermal R&D.
