Overview: This paper discusses a number of potential routes can be identified for encouraging further development and deployment of CO2 control strategies. It is well established that anthropogenic CO2 is produced from a variety of sources, a major contributor being fossil fuel-fired power generation. Other major industries that are heavy users of energy and emitters of CO2 include cement manufacture, oil refining, chemical manufacturing and the metals industries. Sources and levels of CO2 emitted can vary significantly between individual regions and countries and, in the future, each is likely to adopt a different mixture of control measures in order to accommodate its own particular requirements and international obligations.
