Overview: Clean coal technologies (CCTs) have an important role to play over the coming decades to minimize the environmental impact of the substantial coal use that is forecast. This briefing paper focuses primarily on the technologies to reduce sulphur dioxide (SO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2). CCT projects have demonstrated technologies in four key areas: environmental control technologies applicable to conventional plants, advanced power generation, coal processing and industrial applications.
