Overview: A geothermal heat pump system has proved cost-effective and reliable for climate control of the Hazleton St. Joseph Medical Center in Freeland, Pa., in Luzerne County. Two 5-ton and one 7.5-ton ground-coupled heat pumps keep the center's 6,500 sq. ft. of conditioned areas comfortable year-round. Installed in 1988, the geothermal system has been operationally clean. Just as important, the system keeps employees and patients comfortable year-round. The ground-coupled heat pumps at the Hazleton St. Joseph Medical Center have proven reliable since their installation in 1988, even during severe winters and summers.
