Overview: This paper focuses on HVDC Light and development of Voltage Source Converters. A first development step for a new technology was taken and the impression was that this technology would play an important role in the future expansion of electric transmission and distribution systems. Operation and System Tests proved that the properties that have been discussed since many years regarding VSC HVDC are really in existence such as independent control of active and reactive power, operation against isolated ac networks with no generation by its own, very limited need of filters and no need of transformers for the conversion process.
