Overview: This paper reviews the use of engineering software for well planning and drilling operations. Information is presented from two deepwater wells drilled in the Gulf of Mexico. New analysis techniques were developed specifically for well planning in these types of wells. Innovative communications technology allows simulations created onshore in the planning phase to be transferred offshore for use in the execution phase.
