Overview: The role of host country nationals in expatriate adjustment was evaluated using structural equation modeling of survey responses of a sample of expatriates based in Thailand. The findings contribute to theory by identifying an interaction between organizational citizenship behaviors, social categorization and adjustment. As well, there an interaction was found between contextual variables (e.g. salary discrepancies), social categorization and expatriate adjustment. Further, a role in expatriate adjustment was allocated to organizational identification, experienced justice, organizational support and ethnocentrism. The findings propose a more important role for host country nationals in the expatriate adjustment process than has previously been identified with implications for practice.
