Overview: Berkeley is the oldest of the UC campuses and serves as the flagship of California's public university system. The Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) wanted to deploy a renewable energy system, but needed a way to finance it. In a virtually unanimous vote, the students and Graduate Assembly (GA) decided to allocate sizeable portions of their budgets?nearly 10 percent?to pay for the campus' first-ever solar power system. The students chose to invest in on-site solar generation to demonstrate the use of solar power to help meet the University's electrical needs, lower energy costs and benefit the environment.
