Overview: The history of Ridge Vineyards begins in 1886 when Osea Perrone, a doctor from Northern Italy, bought 180 acres near the top of the Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz mountains. Ridge has always approached winemaking with a respect for nature, trusting the earth to express the character of the site. Ridge wanted to incorporate that same philosophy when building the new winery at Lytton Springs. When the energy crisis occurred in California, Ridge began considering on-site generation of electricity using a renewable source. In December 2003, a 65-kilowatt solar electric system was installed on the winery?s south facing roofs.
