Overview: Throughout the 1900s, the nation relied almost entirely on shallow, high-quality reservoirs to provide natural gas. However, as the "low-hanging fruit" of the nation's resource base are picked, it is becoming increasingly necessary to drill into more complex, deeper, and lower-quality reservoirs to meet rising demands. One of the keys to enabling this transition is improved methods of "seeing" the reservoir prior to drilling. This article concisely explains the development of a wide array of advanced diagnostics and imaging tools supported by the Office of Natural Gas (ONG).
