Overview: As on-going gas production continues to move from shallow and conventional natural gas resources to more complex geology, sustained natural gas supply will increasingly depend on industry?s ingenuity to develop environmentally friendly technologies that simultaneously lower the costs to drill, complete, and stimulate wells. To address these needs, the Office of Natural Gas (ONG) oversees a wide range of research and development efforts designed to allow cheaper, deeper, safer, and less damaging drilling in a wide range of environments, which are described in this article.
