Overview: The purpose of this research is to investigate new options of distributed electricity generation, using renewable energy technologies, in rural developing countries. It is increasingly becoming evident that current approaches and models towards electrification are not working, as evidenced by the 2 billion people worldwide with no access to basic electricity services. These models should be reviewed with regard to recent technological advances in distributed energy options, the political and institutional barriers that need to be overcome and the financial implications of different options.
