Overview: The report believes that a "turning of the corner" is in progress concerning realized capital losses in the U.S. life insurance industry following the worst investment results in a decade. First-half 2003 investment results reveal that while realized losses remain above historical levels. While rating downgrades continue to outnumber upgrades in the second quarter of 2003, the ratio of dollar downgrades to upgrades has shown improvement. Fitch's credit research reports significant declines in default rates in the high-yield sector in the first half of 2003.
