Overview: Profitability trends have been favorable for the U.S. auto insurance market as auto insurance rates increased faster than auto insurance loss costs for the past three years (2001-2003). Some insurers have taken full advantage of the recent trend, experiencing strong earnings growth, increasing market share and maintaining strong ratings. Other insurers have lagged behind, continuing to experience underwriting losses or decreased market share. The report believes this latter group will be significantly disadvantaged as competitive and regulatory pressures are increasing due in part to the high profits recently enjoyed by some market participants.
