Overview: This paper gives overview of guidelines for manufactures for use in critical sour drilling applications, must comply with the Industry Recommended Practices (IRP) 1.8 Drill String Design and Metallurgy specifications. Those address material properties, exacting National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) testing requirements and methods, and inspection guidelines. Included are specs for three sour service drill pipe grades and one sour service tool joint. After Jan. 1, 2010, sour service grade pipe must be used on all critical sour wells, with one exception. Proximity to habitation and the H2S release rate determine whether a sour well has a "critical" designation.
