Overview: The global reinsurance sector is currently characterized by a number of surprisingly contradictory features. The sector continues to report the type of strong underwriting results that have characterized it in recent years yet many participants are increasingly warning of softening market conditions. Capital continues to build within the sector yet cedants are more conscious than ever about their reinsurer's credit quality. Reinsurers nurture their relationships with cedants and strive to build and maintain positive images in the marketplace yet cedants increasingly worry about their reinsurers' willingness to pay claims. It is difficult to determine if the glass is half full or half empty.
